While creating a more sustainable food ecosystem is a guiding tenant of our business overall, we’ve doubled down on five specific goals where we feel we can have the most impact, helping ensure a brighter future for us all.
According to the U.N., current estimates show that nearly 690 million people are hungry, or 8.9 percent of the world population – up by 10 million people in one year and by nearly 60 million in five years (source). In order to meet this multifaceted goal of ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture, the U.N. believes that a profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed.
We agree and believe that technology holds the key to not only growing enough food, but ensuring that food reaches the end consumer, rather than going to waste.
To meet the ever changing, ever growing consumer demand, the global food industry currently produces a staggering amount of waste. In fact, one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally per year (source). At True Essence Foods, we’re asking the question “What does a future look like in which we’re able to deliver shelf stable products to consumers around the globe that taste as fresh and have the same nutritional value as the day they were picked off the vine?”
With our partners, we’re utilizing our patented technology to create a myriad of groundbreaking shelf stable products that are fresh, flavorful and nutritious. From a shelf stable packet that transforms into a cold pressed juice when mixed with water, to dried fruits and vegetables with zero added preservatives that maintain their color, shape and flavor and can sit on a shelf for up to two years, we’re creating products that require no cold chain storage in order to make it into the hands of people around the globe and help alleviate the current hunger crisis.
Clean Water and Sanitation
Did you know that 25% of the world’s freshwater supply is used to grow food that is never eaten? At True Essence Foods we’re committed to increasing the amount of viable crops that make it to market, therefore freeing up the amount of water that can go towards critical human needs around the globe. The U.N. states that “worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, and two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility (source).” Using our technologies, we’re reducing food waste by creating a pantry’s worth of shelf stable products; from herbs and spices, to hops, fruit concentrates and more. By decreasing the amount of food and water lost in our supply chain, we’re able to free it up for other uses.
Responsible Consumption and Production
We’re living in a world driven by consumption that is having a devastating impact on our planet. According to the EPA, the average person in the U.S. produces 4.9 pounds of trash per day, which equates to about 147 pounds of trash per person per month, or 1,788.5 pounds per year (source).
At True Essence Foods we’re committed to reducing waste in two major ways.
First, by utilizing our proprietary technology we’re able to remove water without negatively impacting flavor, resulting in the creation of shelf stable products that have up to 85% reduction in mass and up to 90% reduction in volume. The result? We’re able to reduce the amount of packaging needed to ship and store products as compared to fresh products that require cold chain storage, or freeze dried or conventionally dried products that are larger in mass and volume than True Essence Foods dried products.
Secondly, by increasing the shelf life of a fresh food without negatively impacting flavor or nutrition, we’re meeting consumer demand and helping minimize the more than 1 trillion pounds of food wasted globally every year (source). By increasing shelf life and eliminating the need for cold chain storage we’re making it easier to get delicious and nutritious foods into the hands of people who need it most.

According to the U.N., “inclusive and sustainable industrialization, together with innovation and infrastructure, can unleash dynamic and competitive economic forces that generate employment and income. Affordable and Clean Energy
Our global food supply chain is depleting our global energy resources at an unsustainable rate. Currently, 15% of the world’s fossil fuel energy is used in food transport refrigeration (source) and 40% of all foods currently require refrigeration (source).
By creating shelf stable foods with a reduction in up to 85% mass and 90% volume we’re able to eliminate the need for cold chain storage requiring a fraction of the resources to produce, ship and store. As a result we’re leading the charge in providing alternative options to industry challenges that are traditionally far more energy intensive; thereby increasing the viability for alternative energy sources that may not have the power density to support traditional operations. . Products that historically needed to travel by air due to risk of spoilage can now be transported by rail or barge. Additionally, the increase in shelf life allows for less waste.
